Keep some MONEY for Aidil Fitri
September 29th, 2007 at 7:41 am by azwan. Filed under Managing Money.Good Morning! How is your day. I hope everything starts well today.
We have been fasting for 2 weeks already, right? Have Ramadhan changed you? Are you the same person as before or are you a better person. Everyone should strive for the later.
Fasting is not only about knowing what it’s like to be poor and hungry. It’s also not only about giving your stomach the rest it needed. It’s more than that. I am not going to the spiritual side of it but lets look at what can we learn from Ramadhan from the money point of view.
Take a look at what I would usually buy :
- Malay delicacies (exclude popiah) - RM2
- Murtabak - RM2
- Sugar cane juice - RM3
That’s only appetizers, I did not include the main course, dessert or the ones for bersahur and it is already RM7. I spend the same amount for breakfast plus lunch on other months.

Why do we spend more during Ramadhan when we are supposed to learn what’s like to be poor and hungry? We are supposed to control our craving and lustfulness. Why do we buy fresh sugar cane juice everyday when we seldom do it during non fasting period? Why do we need to buy that terubok bakar everyday when normally we only take ikan kembung? With so many Pasar Ramadhan mushrooming almost in every part of Malaysia, it’s hard to resist the temptation. But if you really want to save on spending, this is the month that you should practice all the “spending wisely tips” that you have learned.
A tip for those who are keen to manage money well:
If you can’t finish all your food today or if your stomach is too full after the meal, buy less tomorrow and keep on buying less until you got it right. For students, break fast at the masjid. Good food and some choices too. All sponsored. Did that 5 years ago when my wife was on her maternity leave. The imam and me ‘look like’ best friends
.
Another thing about Pasar Ramadhan which I don’t like is that there are some people there who are selling solely for profit. Some tasted really bad. So be careful, it might look inviting, smells good, but that doesn’t guarantee that it will taste good. Some are even expensive.
A friend emailed me a few days ago:
“semalam aku pi kelana jaya, banyak gerai jual ikan bakar. beli sekor terubok, RM13.. pas tu tengok ikan cencaru belah belakang, terliur pulak.. beli juga sekor… last last semalam buka posa, makan ikan tak habis pun … sebab tak sedap… air asam dia pun tak sedap… ingat malas nak beli lagi dah.. cukup la sekali…..”
For those who don’t understand Malay, it is about a BBQ fish that looks delicious and cost a bomb but tasted like shit
Note to self : Skip terubok and air tebu for a few days. Pics from Chot.

That is ok as long as the food is good. some are really bad, i just wish i got the guts to wack that fellow up. I am not who i used to be anymore
Tak pernah pegi lagi pasar ramadan. Orang kat rumah masak semua sendiri.
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 12:10 am:
masak tu masak jugak, tapi kena jugak beli.
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 12:11 am:
Kalau berniaga cara yang betul dan kena caranya, ramai tak akan kisah. aku pun sanggup menyokong, but to those yang berniaga nak untung semata-mata … berwaspadalah. tak minggu ni, minggu depan aku bakar kedai kau … ah.ah.ahahahahhaah…
Strange ya…… we never learn. Every year we will do the same thing. Surrender to the temptation and we end up wasting. Ada ubat tak penyakit ni..
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 12:30 pm:
penyakit nafsu ni memang takde ubat la. I dont think there will be one.
so far… dah dua minggu puasa ni am dah hilangkan lemak2 berlebihan… 10kg… tapi still la gemok… am tak rajin membeli… kadang am tanya mak am nak beli apa2 tak… selalunya mak am cakap tak payah… nanti makanan yang lebih2 tu bila dah masuk icebox takde maknanya nak makan balik… last2 buang jer… so memang jarang membeli… nasib baik list “teringin” tak panjang berjela… so far yang teringin tu dah rasa cam puding jagung, air tebu, ikan bakar, tepung pelita, n air mata kucing… semua murah2 punya…. lain2 takde dah teringin…
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 12:32 pm:
wooo! 10 KG is a lot. I am trying to loose weight too. Doctor’s order. Kau beruntung lah tinggal dengan mak, especially if you mother is not working anymore. home cook food is always the best. during weeks days, i berbuka puasa di SP but when come back to KL, wife lately selalu tak larat. ye lah .. dah dekat nak bersalin so most of the time we will buy.
bajet aku, sehari RM7 untuk bersahur ngan berbuka…
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 1:19 pm:
Kau student lagi, mana boleh budget besar kan
. Tapi masa aku kat U dulu-dulu. RM5 pun boleh hidup lagi masa bulan puasa.
Bro..param kat SU ke tu?
Tapi ari tu aku beli tepung pelita memang xsedap….sedey betul.
Kat situ lah, where else. but the one that i bought tu dah tak meniaga dah. ramai komplen kut.
ironinya,
berpuasa untuk mengawal nafsu, nafsu yg tu je kot ehehehe… thn2 lps ada gak aku g buffet kat otel, thn ni x da kot.. malas…
azwan reply on September 30th, 2007 10:37 pm:
aku berbuffet baru sekali aje tahun ni, tu pun price dia RM25 per person. Kalau lebih, sorry ah
aku dah 3 kali beli ikan bakar yg rasanya hanyir dan masam..mcm ikan lama…skrg ni ikan aku goreng je la kat umah..
azwan reply on October 1st, 2007 12:19 pm:
Ni lah masalahnya. Berniaga nak untung semata-mata tak kira kepuasan pelanggan, janji boleh jual busuk ke … tak sedap ke .. hampeh!
Paling diingat, murtabak spesel RM3 tapi mmg tak sedap. Tebal je boleh harap.
Kuih muih kat bazaar ramadan semua tak sedap, beli kat area depan2 rumah aje. Gerenti habis.
azwan reply on October 1st, 2007 12:20 pm:
kalau tebal kentang tak mengapa lagi, ada setengah tu tebal sebab penuh bawang
hmm… bg saya pulak, saya kurang membeli di bazaar ramadhan. sbb selalu masak dirumah sahaja. Lebih baik begitu coz saya ni pemboros sket, nanti abih sume makanan kt bazaar ramadhan abis saya borong…. huhuhuhuhuuh….
azwan reply on October 1st, 2007 10:33 pm:
Kau boleh masak? datang rumah aku boleh
Wish you all a happy Eid!
