SEO: The Basics of Optimization Part I

I started this series of SEO posts after taking part in the Belajar SEO challenge. I didn’t win, when they announced the winner, there’s always a next time. Congrats to the winners, maybe they should share their tips.
What’s My Current Position
If you search using google.com, my post is currently on the 2nd page. If you search using google.com.my, it’s on the first page, but if you search using google.com.my and specifically checking ‘pages from Malaysia’ button, mine is the first Not bad huh? For a semi-pro in SEO. Then again, as I mentioned in my What Is SEO post, the keyword is not competitive nor popular. It will be very easy to break into the first page. Let see whether my post will stay that way or not after 3 months
This is going to be a very simple post with links. There’s nothing specific. Just a general view on the basics of SEO. Not that I am lazy to write, but there’s a lot of people who have written about these things and the best way is to link to them.
Once your are clear with what keyword to optimize, the next few steps include:
- WordPress Optimization
- On Page Optimization
- Off Page Optimization
- and finally, using SEO Tools
WordPress Optimization
If you are using a WordPress blog, you have to pay attention to this first as WordPress, believe it or not, is not properly optimized for SEO. I’ve read about this for quite some time already, but I can’t remember the exact link. However, found one recently through one of Ramzan’s post on Advance SEO techniques that is WordPress SEO. On Page Optimization
This is the most basics. On page optimization is about how you tell the search engines’s bots, what is you post/blog all about. Once you have your keywords validated and checked for competitiveness, use them in:
- Domain name, preferably if you have a niche site
- Meta tags
- Meta descriptions
- Post title & headings
- Post categories & tags
- Using the correct header tags, and text styles i.e. h1, bold, italic and underline
- Keyword density.
- Image title, image alt tags, image description
- Internal linkings between your own post
How you do it, is up to you, but never overdo or your post will be flagged as spam especially keyword density. 2 - 5 % is sufficient. Overdo and die.
The best method is to always think like a seacher when writting a title. I am still not good at this. Read Copyblogger’s how to get attention which I got through Mohd Ismail.
