Setting Up Your Own WordPress Blog : The Setting Up

Robotech SDF 1

Before you can actually invite you friends to play at your digital playground, you need to install WordPress first. Your hosting company will give all the links, login ids and passwords. Once you got all the required info, the next thing to do is log in to your cPanel and setup your blog. Refer to WikiPedia for details on what is cPanel. Basically, cPanel (”Control Panel”) is just a graphical web-hosting control panel, designed to make administration of your server easy. No details on cPanel here, you can get more info from your hosting company. NetKL has a few video tutorials on cPanel functionalities.

Setting Up Your Domain

First is to specify where to put your blog. Although you have already purchased a domain. For example, mine is at http://azwanhadzree.com, but it doesn’t mean that yours must be at http://yourdomain.com. There is a lot of ways to do it. It’s up to you, it’s yours remember. You can also set up you blog like :

  • http://blog.azwanhadzree.com or
  • http://azwanhadzree.com/blog or

just replace the word blog above with whatever you like. I have my kids blog under the same domain at http://kids.azwanhadzree.com.

To make it simple, just setup your blog at the main domain, like mine. Unless you want to make your main domain as a portal or your internet business site and your subdomain blog will be supporting your business site. Some people might want to setup multiple sites/blogs in one domain. There may be a directory subdomain, and then an article directory subdomain, a blog or whatever, but choose wisely. Not that you can’t change it later but you will loose all the index done by the search engines and the links that people made to you earlier.

Another thing is, there’s no different between http://azwanhadzree.com and http://www.azwanhadzree.com.

Some of the wonders of having you own domain :)

Setting Up Wordpress and its DataBase

OK, let say you have decided what your domain should look like, here’s what you need to do. You can

  • do a manual installation of Wordpress
  • or let Fantastico do it for you

This depends on the hosting company whether it comes with CPanel and Fantastico or not. Mostly do. Setting up a WordPress blog with Fantastico is easy. Click here and there and you are done. If you do it manually, it takes longer as you need to setup your database, download, extract and upload WordPress, and more, but you know what’s happening and it will be easier for you to troubleshoot if there’s any problem. To do that, refer here. It has all the instruction you need.

For those who wants everything auto, use Fantastico. The next steps will show you how to setup via Fantastico, upload themes and plugins, upgrade your blog (via WordPress Automatic Plugin) and some basic WordPress setup.

Setting Up Wordpress with Fantastico

This is a 3 steps process.

  • Step 1: Log in to your cPanel.
Look for Fantastico and click on its icon.

    cPanel

In Fantastico, go to Blogs and click on WordPress and then click on new installation. Most hosting companies should have at least version 2.3.2.

After that, the below screen will come up. For this example, I am installing the example blog at http://www.merapuland.com/wooi. If you want it to be like http://azwanhadzree.com, then just leave the ‘Install In Directory‘ column blank. ‘Admin Access Data‘ is your WordPress login id and password. The rest, key in accordingly. Then, click on ‘Install Wordpress‘.

  • Step 2: This screen will show up.

If you are ok with it, click on ‘Finish Installation‘. Here it will tell you your MySQL info and where it will install WordPress.

  • Step 3: You’re done!

    setting up wordpress with fantastico

Open a new tab in your browser and type in your blog domain address. To log in into wordpress, just refer to ‘the full URL to the admin area‘ above for the link, and use the user setting as per in ‘Admin Access Data‘ in step one.

You can actually start blogging. Setting up with Fantastico is easy. If you’ve made a mistake, just redo. Go back to step one, look for current installation and there will be a link for removal.

To be continued …

why not, hosting from netkl is quite cheap to start of with. RM60 for a whole year which includes domain and hosting is a bargain.

dont think to long, just do it :)
