Angkasa + Azwan = Angkasawan

11 October 2007 27 Comments

Ha..ha.. no, I did not create that word :) .

Pictures of Soyuz launchingWhatever they call it, angkasawan, astronaut, cosmonaut or even a spaceflight participant, a Malaysian, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, is now in space and I have something to brag to my kiasu Singaporean friends. Ha..ha.. your egos are going to get busted, but before that, any Singaporean been to Mars, moon or space yet?

At exactly 9.23pm last night the Soyuz FG rocket launcher, carrying the Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft, blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Soyuz TMA-11 is scheduled to dock to the International Space Station on October 12, 2007. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar will study the effects of microgravity and space radiation on cells and microbes, and experiments with proteins for a potential HIV vaccine. Luckily no teh tarik or menebar roti canai in outer space. Whatever he does, I wonder what happens when he goes to toilets? No gravity, remember?

Are we spending to much of this expedition? MYR 95 Million is a lot of money, but according to the National Angkasawan Program, the Russian Government is bearing all costs. The program is part of an offset agreement between Malaysia and Russia in relation to Malaysia’s purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi-30MKM fighter jets. The Russian government offered this to sweeten the deal on the purchased made by our Air Force.

This will be another first for Malaysia and it should be enough to spurs our young generation to achieve more in the future. We already sent a man, maybe a spacecraft of our own after this.

Picture is from Nasa. You can find pictures of Dr Sheikh Muszaphar at the Angkasawan blog. If you missed the Soyuz launch last night, here’s the video :

yes its an important mission,a first step to long journey of battle in science and tech. if anybody think this is a waste of public fund, please use any single cent of my contributed income tax.

Well, if we want any significant mileage in science and tech , the critical answer would be INVESTMENT. Unlike idiotic mission to top of Everest and lone crossing in antartica, this mission is all about scientific journey. not just for pure “bangga” sake.

I know how you feel, I wanted to say something about Azhar Mansor and also the guy who swan across somewhere in this blog last night but tak jadi. That was a totally stupid mission. Malaysia should be concentrating on missions that benefit the country as a whole not just for someone aiming for the datukship.

By the way, he mentioned Saint Paul (my primary and secondary school) in the Angkasawan blog, looks like he still remembers us :)

yes, yes Malaysia boleh! This is all to show off! He is just a space tourist, anyone fit and has money can go to space. Wasted taxpayers’ money could have been used to improve public transportation. Or better yet, use the money to send the corrupted UMNO politicians to Mars without oxygen suply!!

I prefer not to be a Malaysian basher all the time. Certain things should be looked from a diff perspective. Hey … it’s not a perfect world.
